10 Tips To Reduce Your Winter Energy Bills

Did you know that the average home use 40% more natural gas, and 8% more electricity for every 10 degree drop in temperature below 0°C?

Following are a few simple steps which can drastically reduce your energy bill and put that money back in your pocket.

  1. Seal Up Gaps
Add weather stripping around exterior doors, gaskets to electrical outlets, and closing the chimney flue when not in use will avoid letting the cold air in and the warm air escape.
  2. Clear The Vents
Maximize heating efficiency by removing furniture, rugs, or

other items which are placed over vents. If necessary, use an air deflector to send warm air into the room.

  1. Use Space Heaters
Selectively use space heaters to warm one room as opposed to heating the entire house. The small amount of electricity will be much less expensive than the cost of natural gas required to heat the entire home.
  2. Take Advantage Of Sunshine
On sunny winter days, open your blinds and curtains to allow the sun’s radiant energy to help heat your home and take some of the load off your furnace.
  3. Don’t Overset The Thermostat
On cold days, set the thermostat at a comfortable level and let it do its job. Setting the thermostat high and then lowering it will not heat the house up quicker, and will cost more in the long run.
  4. Lights Out
Get in the habit of turning off the light when they are not in use. It’s a simple, common sense thing which can save a huge amount of money over the course of a year.
  5. Use LED Bulbs
As old bulbs burn out, replace them with Energy Star certified LED bulbs which use 90 less power and last 15x longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
  6. Unplug Electronic Devices
Standby power is the electrical energy used when a device is plugged in but not in use. Unplugging certain electronic devices when they are not in use can translate to a 10% saving on your total energy bill.
  7. Change Laundry Routine
By washing more clothes in cold water, hanging laundry on a drying rack, and throwing a dry towel in the dryer to help your clothes dry faster, you will see a tremendous saving on your energy bill.
  8. Use Our Dry Climate
Instead of using the heat dry function on your dishwasher, open the dishwasher door and let the dry Alberta climate do its job. You’ll be surprised by the impact on you energy bill.
